Meant to be locked

Built in locks

Safe

While genuine safes can be quite costly, more budget-friendly alternatives like toy safes, such as piggy bank safes, are readily available. Safes can be seamlessly integrated into various escape room themes, from heist scenarios to espionage missions. But it wouldn’t be far-fetched to find a safe in a completely ordinary living space or office.

Cash box

Despite being quite cheap, cash boxes can be quite sturdy. Plus, they come in various sizes.

Luggage

Some suitcases come with built in locks. Depending on the theme, you could go for business or ragged family heirloom style. Flea markets are a true treasure trove for such pieces.

Mailbox

Mailboxes may be a less obvious choice for an escape room because they are commonly found outdoors. Nevertheless, they provide secure storage for, well, letters.

Key safe

A key safe, also known as a key lockbox or key storage box, is a secure container designed to store keys in a way that allows only authorized individuals who have the necessary code or key to open it. Of course, it could hold other small objects as well.

Jewelery box

These stylish and functional containers go nicely with many escape room themes.

Display case

A lockable display case is a specialized enclosure designed to showcase and protect valuable or collectible items while ensuring their security. They come in various shapes and sizes.

Donation box

A container designed for collecting charitable contributions while allowing donors to see the donations accumulating inside. A quirky way to donate the next clue to your players.

Toolbox

Some toolboxes come with built-in locks such as key locks or combination locks. The perfect place to hide tools.

Diary

Lockable diaries come in many different styles and can thus be matched to the theme of your escape room, from historical mysteries to modern espionage scenarios. The narrative entries discovered within a diary not only propel the story forward but also offer essential clues, making a diary an indispensable asset for any escape room experience.

attachable locks

Phone safe

A phone safe is a secure and lockable container designed for temporarily storing mobile phones or other electronic devices.

Phone safes come equipped with a reliable locking mechanism like key locks, combination locks, electronic keypad locks, or even smart locks that can be controlled remotely.

Tool box with padlock fixture

Most toolboxes that do not come with built in locks come with built in fixtures for padlocks.

Medicine cabinet

Alphabet photography is a type of visual art that involves capturing photographs of everyday objects, architectural details, or natural elements that resemble letters of the alphabet. These individual letter images are then combined to spell out words, names, or messages.

Not (actually) meant to be locked…

…but still lockable

Cage

Cages are easy to lock by simply sliding a padlock through the bars. Cages have the advantage that players can see what they need to obtain, but cannot reach it – like the key tied around the chick’s neck in this case.

Zipper bag

Zipper bags are a very costefficient lockable container and come in many colors, styles and sizes. Just make sure that the bag you want to use has a hook on the side the zipper closes. Slide a padlock through the hook and the zipper – done!

Alternatively, if the bag has two zippers, you can lock the zippers together with a small padlock or a zipper lock.

Box with integrated handle

This type of box includes an integrated handle, which is incorporated into the design through a cutout or opening in the two symmetrical sides of the box. For small boxes of this kind, a padlock might suffice to lock it. For bigger boxes, you might want to consider a retractable cable lock or a tightly wrung cable padlock.

Padlock hasp

Padlock hasps come in many different sizes and styles. They come with screws and feature screw openings, which makes them an ideal mechanism for wooden containers. Simply attach the hasp to the lid and the staple to the front of the container and slide a padlock through it.

Eye hooks

Eye hooks come in many different sizes and are ideal for wooden containers. Simply attach one to the lid and one to the front of the container and slide a padlock through it.
